After almost two years of standing on the sidelines reading everyone else blogs, I'm finally blogging again. Why the long hiatus? I've just been really busy working on client sites. The old mechanics own car / shoe cobblers children have no shoes thing. I suppose that's a bit of a lame excuse considering many web designers and developers I know are at least equally as busy as I am and still manage to post to their blogs quite regularly. I guess a better way to put it is I haven't had the time to design and develop the blog I envision in my head. You see, I'm a bit of a perfectionist. And perfection takes time and can cause endless procrastination and paralysis by analysis.
I did not build the perfect blog here. Not even close to what I had envisioned. But it's a blog. And something is better than nothing. Action is always better than inaction. I'm not even going to bother trying to craft the perfect post.
I'm writing this post at 3:30am. I couldn't sleep so I decided to make a blog. I downloaded a fresh copy of Drupal only three hours ago. I made a quick and dirty theme from scratch. And now I'm blogging again. Finally.
For my Drupal friends looking for a few technical specs, this Drupal site couldn't be any more simple. There are no contributed modules installed. That's right, not even CCK and Views yet. I'm using the 'story' content type for my blog posts. I started off with the Stark theme just so I didn't have to create a .info file and such from scratch. Stark doesn't even provide any template files, just a few lines of CSS for to manage the old header, content, sidebar and footer layout. I actually deleted the css and started my own. As you can see, there's not much to the design. We got Georgia happening for the fonts, lots of whitespace, a few color choices, a one column layout, and we're done. For now at least. I do intend to tweak this over time. My next step is to create a 'blog post' content type with CCK, have a proper blog page and RSS feed with Views. I should also add Path Auto.
Whatever. I'm blogging again and that's all that matters. Stay tuned, more to come.
